When you learn a new language, it can be super beneficial, especially when traveling to a foreign country. It can also help you make new connections with people with different cultures and backgrounds other than your own.
I think learning the basics of any language can be useful. Even if you have a month, a week, or even if its the day before your trip, you still have time to learn the native language.
Now is the perfect time to learn a new language during quarantine! I will share with you how to learn the basics of any language for your trip.
Set a goal
The first step you should do before trying to learn a new language would be to first set a goal. A mistake that some people can make is taking on to much at one time.
When setting your goal, you should decide how much time you will learn and practice the new language. It is a good idea to also have a start date so that you don’t end up procrastinating!
Learn words you will actually use
If you are starting from scratch it is a good idea to think about what words you will use on a daily basis.
- Sit down and write out a self-introduction in English. You should pretend like you are introducing yourself to a stranger. This includes your name, where you are from, and why you are visiting. After you write this down, then you can plug it into Google Translate and even have it pronounced. Once you do this, you can start practicing and committing the phrase to your memory.
- Make a list of foods you like, things you would like to do, and other necessities. Learning the word bathroom would be a necessity. If you can’t eat something specific like pork, learning that word would be beneficial when ordering food.
- Greetings and farewells are great to know and you will use these phrases on a regular.
- Learning numbers is useful when dealing with quantities. Let’s say you want four baguettes or two coffees. You can always use your fingers, but you don’t want to get weird stares.
- Learning emergency phrases such as help, stop, and thief will make sure you are prepared just in case something happens.
Practice Before You Go
I know you have heard of practice makes perfect, which is very accurate when you are practicing a new language.
You can practice talking to your family members or friends! It is also a plus if you find a native speaker to practice with.
There are also youtube videos to help your practice. Even watching some shows in the language you are learning can be beneficial. Thinking in the new language will also help you learn faster.
Using language apps is a great way to learn new languages and can help keep you motivated. I recommend apps like Duolingo, Memrise, Babbel, and Mango languages.
Have Fun
Learning a new language should be a fun experience and not a stressful one. You can share your new skill with friends and family, and they’ll even ask for your expertise!
You will also get to know the culture of the language as well as experience your vacation and not just survive it. Making friends around the world can lead to a more meaningful experience when you travel.
Do you aspire to learn a new language? I challenge you to spend some time every day for 30 days learning a new language! I would love to know what language you want to learn. Drop it below in the comments!

Good tips! I always find that people appreciate it and you so much more when you can at least attempt the language even if it’s only greetings and thank you. I have Duolingo on my phone and love it!
